Everyone is encouraged to come to Tathra to compete and support Broulee. The Program for this carnival is attached.
To qualify for the branch championships, competitors must have competed in at two carnivals previously and boats must have competed in one carnival.

For those coming to Tathra early, a number of people from the Club are camping at Gillard’s Beach on Saturday night.
Gillard’s beach is 5 klm north of Tathra on the Bermagui Rd.
There are toilets, fire places with wood provided and BBQ plates.
However, you need to bring your own drinking water.

Sunday Handicap Swim

The Sunday Handicap Swim is proving increasingly popular, with 35 members completing a least one swim.
Occasionally we have had as many as 20(+) starters.
The swim will continue through to the morning of 5th April, so there is plenty of time yet to catch the runaway Points Leader, Alan Veness.
The swim is on every Sunday from 9.30 (cancelled on 8th March because of the Branch Championships).
For those interested in continuing beyond 5th April, a small group of swimmers is planning to continue with a Sunday morning fitness swim at 9.30, doing a few laps of Shark Bay.
Everyone is welcome. As the months progress, a wetsuit may be an optional addition to the goggles.
More info to follow over coming weeks.

Broulee U19’s Surfboat crew star on Fox Sports

Broulee Surfers U19 crew “The Chinese Cooks” competed by invitation in the professional Surfboat series Ocean Thunder.
The crew won the invitation after finishing second in the International Young Guns Carnival.

The crew ; Sweep Rob Pollock , Stroke Ryan Pollock , Second Stroke Matt Ivanoff, Second Bow Ashan Budworth and Bow Jason Whylie did themselves proud in big surf conditions to finish a very close second to Avoca Beach in the U19 final.
In the Final the crew started well until they hit a wave on the way out which flung Ashan Budworth out of the boat, Bulli and Swansea Belmont were swamped.
Ashan swam back and was able to get back in the boat and continue rowing.
Broulee was 20mts back in 4th place after recovering Ashan.
Broulee followed Phia NZ, Avoca Beach and Collaroy to the buoys.
After turning in 4th place, the crew caught a great runner from the cans and bore down on Avoca. After falling off the runner a big wave sat for the crew and Chinese Cooks caught the wave which they surfed around Avoca to avoid collision.
Both Avoca and Broulee came to shore on the same wave whilst Phia NZ and Collaroy came to grief.
Avoca were closer to the finish peg and won the race to the finish gate, with Jason Whylie crossing for the crew in second.

The crew will now finalise training preparations for the Australian Titles later this month. After winning the Interstate U19 novice event, the NSW Country Championships, and finishing second at the International Young Guns and Ocean Thunder as well as their strong finals appearance at the ASRL Australian Open final, Broulee Chinese Cooks are full of confidence.

ASRL SUB-COMMITTEE WASH UP MEETING

On 22nd Feb, the ASRL Sub-committee and area coordinators met for the last time for a wash up meeting.
Here is a summary of the outcomes from that meeting.

The Chairman, Rob ‘Polly’ Pollock, opened the meeting by thanking all sub-Committee members and area coordinators for their commitment and hard work over the past twelve months. He also again expressed his thanks to all volunteers who assisted throughout the event.

  • Mick Lambert reported that the Traffic Management area went very smoothly. Beach management was assisted by Neville Green who came up with an excellent numbering system for trailers. Special thanks should go to Tony Nott for his invaluable support to the traffic team.
  • The merchandising area was not successful largely because of the significant quantity of free sponsors products on offer. However, we should just break even. Remaining stock will be sold at cost price through the boutique. Get in quick if you missed out.
  • Pete Haselden reported that the volunteers in the General Workforce were outstanding with no significant issues.
  • Steve Ziegler & Garry Robbins IRB crews had a very busy weekend and all went well. They recommended the club consider the purchase of a ‘range finder’ to assist with placement of the turning cans. They expressed their thanks to Phil Allpress for his help in setting the markers for the course.
  • Committee members were unanimous in praise of the catering team managed by Penny Smith & Wendy Law. The standard of food, delivery and service was excellent, with officials commenting they had never been so well looked after. Further, the system of food preparation at Carroll College was a great success.
  • Barb Wells reported that all sponsorship money was received and the corporate deck, despite numbers being less than expected, was very successful. Special
  • thanks to Darren Phillips for organising the erection of the deck. In terms of catering, Roger Bayley was a thorough professional and delivered as promised. Barb would also like to thank Vicki Walsh’s Mum for making the aprons for deck staff.
  • John Edmunds was pleased with the bar sales, including 34 kegs of full strength and 3 – 4 kegs of light beer. All volunteers completed their shifts and were excellent. The main problem was the four hour delay in competition proceedings on the Saturday, which significantly impacted bar trading. John asked that thanks go out to Richard Hogg, Fosters and Eurobodalla Refrigeration.
  • Kim Fletcher was not available but Shane Madden presented the Report. He commended Kim’s preparation of an excellent response plan and praised the outstanding efforts of the medical and support team. Committee members were unanimous in their praise for the emergency volunteers.
  • Tony Whelan reported that radio comms worked well.  There was a bit of chatter over the top of our comms at one stage from another Club but was quickly resolved. At times things were worryingly quiet – because everything was running smoothly.
  • Andrew Edmunds said that Navy was very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the beach clean up. Overall, operations ran smoothly. The limited success for the vendors was very disappointing for them and for the sub–Committee. The heat kept spectator numbers down over the weekend, and the recently re-surfaced car park was a problem. The majority of vendors recognised the conditions were beyond our control and made the most of the weekend.
  • Gordon reported that if all accounts are paid, BSSLSC should make a profit. However, final figures are unknown at this stage and will be released when all accounts are finalised and payments received.
  • Special Thanks: at the risk of missing someone out  (and if I have I’m sorry – not intentional) the sub-Committee would like to thank:
    • Tony Nott – from SkyLine Trees.
    • Darren Phillips – Hontondo Homes
    • Dave & Wendy Law – DWL Holdings
    • Richard Hogg – Catalina Club
    • Peter Louttit – P & L Louttit Total Constructions
    • Peter Halkett – Broulee Electrical Service
    • Rob Pollock – Moruya Hi-Fi & Electrical
    • Tony Barry - Signature Electrical

  • Thank You Drinks & BBQ. A special club thankyou to all volunteers is scheduled for Sunday 26th April from 3pm. Please ensure all volunteers who may not receive this newsletter are invited. The community got behind this event in a big way, and this is our club’s small token of thanks to them.
